What makes a chart Manglik?
Mangal dosha (also kuja dosha) arises when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart. The logic is positional: from those houses Mars — the planet of heat, force and impatience — aspects or occupies the houses governing marriage, the household, and intimacy (2nd: family, 4th: home, 7th: spouse, 8th: longevity of the union, 12th: bed comforts).
Traditions differ on details: South Indian practice usually counts the 2nd house, some schools also assess Mars from the Moon and from Venus, not just the ascendant. This is why two websites can disagree about the same chart — always check which reference point was used.
The cancellations (bhanga) most checks skip
Classical texts list many conditions that neutralise the dosha, and they apply to a large share of charts. The best-known:
- Mars in its own signs (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn — a dignified Mars behaves constructively
- Mars in specific sign-house combinations (e.g. Aries in the 1st, Sagittarius in the 8th per regional traditions)
- Jupiter's aspect on Mars or on the 7th house — the great benefic's supervision
- Both partners Manglik — the doshas are held to offset each other
- Age-based softening: many practitioners hold the dosha's intensity fades after the late twenties as Mars matures
How it's used in kundli matching
In Ashtakoota matching the Manglik status sits alongside the 36-guna score, not inside it — a high guna score with a one-sided, uncancelled Mangal dosha still gets flagged. A responsible reading always states three things: whether the dosha exists, from which reference (lagna/Moon/Venus), and whether any bhanga applies. MyAstro360's dosha check reports severity and cancellations explicitly rather than a bare yes/no.
Traditional remedies
Where the dosha stands uncancelled, tradition prescribes remedies rather than prohibition. Commonly recommended:
- Mangal shanti puja, especially on Tuesdays, and recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa
- Kumbh vivah — the symbolic ceremony performed before the wedding in stricter traditions
- Fasting on Tuesdays; donation of red lentils (masoor), red cloth or coral
- Red coral (moonga) worn only after a qualified astrologer confirms Mars is a functional benefic for the chart — gemstones for a malefic Mars can backfire
A grounded perspective
Manglik status describes one planet's placement, not a verdict on a person. Millions of successful marriages involve Manglik charts — the classical framework itself says so through its long list of cancellations. Treat an online 'Manglik: yes' as the start of a proper reading, never the end.
